The DE 50 Mini is the smallest model in the series and weighs up to 50 grams in 0.01-gram increments. The DL 100, DX 100, and LS 100 all have a capacity of 100 grams. They differ mainly in shape and cover. The DX 100 has a sliding cover that leaves the display exposed, while the other models have a protective cover that can also be used as a weighing pan.
The NV 500 has a capacity of up to 500 grams and is accurate to 0.01 grams. The model with a 1,000-gram silicone bowl measures in increments of 0.1 grams. The mini version with a silicone bowl measures up to 100 grams.
A precision scale is ideal for herbs, spices, and homemade cosmetics. A hundredth of a gram also comes in handy when measuring out powdered supplements or making jewelry. It’s especially with small quantities that you’ll notice the difference compared to a regular kitchen scale.
If you’re looking for a scale you can always carry with you, choose the DE 50 Mini. It’s slim, lightweight, and fits in a pants pocket. For most people, a 100-gram range is more than enough. The DL 100, DX 100, and LS 100 fall into that category. The DX 100 is great if you want to shield the screen without a separate cover. If you’re baking in the kitchen or weighing larger portions of spices, the NV 500 is a better choice.
The two models with silicone trays have a major advantage. You can fold the tray flat when you’re done. You can use it to collect powders, flowers, and small parts without spilling anything. Then you can easily pour the contents into a small jar. The large version weighs up to one kilogram, but is less precise than the models that measure to the hundredth of a gram.
When choosing a scale, also consider the power source. Smaller models usually run on button-cell batteries. Replace the battery as soon as the display starts to dim, because a dead battery can sometimes cause inaccurate readings. Remove the battery if you won’t be using the scale for a long time.
After use, clean the weighing surface with a dry cloth or a small brush. Water and cleaning agents can seep into the housing. Never place anything on the scale that exceeds the maximum capacity.
