Four types

Baby Hawaiian Woodrose, whose Latin name is Argyreia nervosa, is a large climbing plant native to India. It has heart-shaped leaves and purple flowers. Morning Glory is known in Latin as Ipomoea purpurea. It is the well-known purple morning glory with trumpet-shaped flowers. Ololiuqui, Rivea corymbosa, is native to Mexico and has white flowers. Yopo, Anadenanthera peregrina, is a tree native to South America.

A plant for the garden

Morning Glory is one of the easiest climbing plants for a balcony or fence. Sow it in the spring in a sunny spot. Soak the seeds overnight in lukewarm water before sowing them. Within a few weeks, it will climb up a trellis or string. In the summer, it produces new flowers every morning.

Hawaiian Woodrose and Ololiuqui are tropical plants. They grow best indoors or in a warm greenhouse.

Caring for Climbing Plants

In the Netherlands, a Hawaiian Woodrose grows best as a houseplant. Place it in a large pot near a bright window. Provide it with a stake or trellis to climb along. In the summer, you can place it on a sheltered patio. As soon as nighttime temperatures drop below ten degrees, bring it back inside.

Ololiuqui prefers warm, humid conditions. A greenhouse or sunroom is ideal. Spray the leaves occasionally with lukewarm water. Never let the soil dry out completely, but also make sure no water remains in the saucer.

Morning Glory is an annual. The plant blooms all summer and dies back in the fall. Let a few seed pods ripen at the end of the season. That way, you'll have your own seeds again next year.

Yopo is a tree that takes years to grow to full size. Grow it in a pot and place it outdoors in the summer. In the winter, it needs a bright, frost-free spot.

Store seeds that you aren't planting yet in a cool, dry, and dark place. That way, they'll remain viable for years.

History

Indigenous peoples in Central America have used Ololiuqui and Morning Glory in rituals for centuries. The Aztecs knew the seeds by their own names. Yopo was used by peoples in the Amazon region. Today, the plants are especially prized for their beauty and their unique story.

Legislation and Safety

The seeds are legally available for sale in the Netherlands as planting material and collectibles. LSA itself is not listed under the Opium Act, but different rules may apply in other countries. The seeds are not intended for consumption. They can cause nausea and other symptoms. Keep them out of the reach of children and pets.

Seeds sold as planting stock are sometimes treated. Wash your hands after sowing.
