Rivea corymbosa, also described as Turbina corymbosa, is the plant behind the Nahuatl name ololiuqui. In pre-colonial Mesoamerica, particularly among the Aztecs and neighboring peoples, the seeds were part of priestly and healing rituals. They were used to seek guidance, mark sacred occasions, and achieve a ceremonial state under the guidance of specialists—not as a casual pastime.

Spanish colonial writers described its use with a mixture of detail and disapproval, which is how the plant came to be recorded in European archives. Later botanists confirmed the species and mapped its range in Mexico and Central America. The plant itself is unassuming: a perennial climber with pale flowers. Its cultural significance lay in the seed and the rules surrounding it.

A modern package of 40 seeds cannot replicate that sacred setting, but it can remain honest about the plant’s origins. This is a ritual plant from Central America, not some newly invented curiosity. Responsible interest means respecting that history, not treating the seeds as party favors, and exercising the same caution as the traditional practice entailed: clear boundaries, a sober environment, and no regular repetition.

The plant is a perennial climber with heart-shaped leaves and white, morning glory-like flowers. After flowering, it produces capsules containing small, hard, brown seeds. These seeds constitute the entire product. As with other plant-based products, the characteristics may vary by harvest and origin—yet another reason to start with a low dose.
