What are Mazatapecs?
Mazatapec (also known as Psilocybe Mayiescens) is a Mexican cubensis variety known for its elegant, relatively large mushrooms with light brown to golden brown caps and sturdy stems. The strain is named after the Mazatec people of the mountains of Oaxaca, where these mushrooms have been used for centuries in ceremonial and spiritual contexts.
Mazatapec produces powerful, vivid visuals with a relatively clear headspace and a strong spiritual undertone. Cultivation is relatively easy and suitable for beginners. A 1200 cc kit yields an average of 300–400 grams of fresh magic mushrooms over 2–3 flushes at 20–25 °C. Store the kit in a cool place (2–4 °C) until use for optimal shelf life (up to approximately 6 months).
History of Mazatapec
The Mazatapec strain has its origins in the indigenous cultures of Mexico, specifically among the Mazatec people in the Oaxaca region. There, psilocybin mushrooms have been used for centuries by shamans and curanderos for healing, insights, and contact with the divine. The world-famous curandera María Sabina brought this tradition to the attention of the West in the 1950s.
Within the modern cultivation community, this strain was selected and stabilized for its spiritual qualities, intense visual effects, and reliable growth. The advent of ready-to-grow kits made it possible to grow these ancient genetics at home. Today, Mazatapec is known as a bridge between ancient ceremonial traditions and contemporary psychedelic exploration.
How do you use Mazatapec?
Growing is simple and beginner-friendly. Wash your hands thoroughly, clean the outside of the kit, and fill it with lukewarm water (20 °C). Let it soak for up to 5 minutes (never longer than 1 hour). Drain thoroughly, place the kit in the growing bag, add 200–250 ml of lukewarm water, and seal with the paper clips.
Place the bag in a location with a temperature of 20–25 °C, out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources. Keep the bag closed until the first pinheads appear (usually 10–20 days). After that, ventilate daily and lightly mist. Harvest just before the veil under the cap breaks by gently twisting the mushroom and pulling it out completely. Repeat the process for subsequent flushes.
When consumed: start with a low dose (cubensis dosage).
- Mild high: ± 1 g dried
- Typical dose: 1.5–2.5 g
- Stronger trip: 2.5–3.5 g
Use in a safe, quiet, and preferably meditative setting.
