Origin and History of Kanna

Sceletium tortuosum occurs naturally in the drier landscapes of South Africa. For centuries, the Khoekhoe and San chewed fermented or dried material while traveling, during gatherings, and at times when they sought relaxation. Dutch observers later referred to this chewing mass as “kougoed.” European descriptions became more numerous in the nineteenth century, but the plant’s use dates back much further.

The plant was valued for its effects on mood, thirst, and a sense of calm social well-being, rather than as a potent intoxicant. Knowledge of the plant remained local for a long time before dried material began appearing in stores abroad. The extract is a more concentrated, modern version of the same plant species.

Ingredients

The only ingredient is Sceletium tortuosum, the South African succulent traditionally known as kanna. The 1-gram package contains the 40x concentrated extract and nothing else: no fillers, no added flavorings, and no other plants. The aroma and potency may vary slightly from harvest to harvest, so always start with a measured first cup.
