Origin and History of Kanna

Sceletium tortuosum grows naturally in the drier regions of South Africa. For centuries, the Khoekhoe and San chewed fermented or dried plant material during their travels, gatherings, and moments of rest. Dutch colonists later called this chewing substance “kougoed.” European descriptions became more numerous in the nineteenth century, but the plant’s use dates back much further.

The plant was known for its effects on mood, thirst, and a sense of calm social well-being. Some traditional preparations involved fermentation; the extract is a more concentrated, modern version of the same plant species.

Ingredients

The only ingredient is Sceletium tortuosum, the South African succulent traditionally known as kanna. The 1-gram package contains the 20x concentrated extract and nothing else: no fillers, no added flavorings, and no other plants. The aroma and strength may vary slightly from harvest to harvest, so always start with a measured first cup.
