Simple screens are beneficial in many ways: most burning particles don't make it into your mouth, less herb is wasted, and they make it easier to clean your pipe/bong.

Darts are usually made of metal, wood, or glass. They can have an acrylic (plastic) exterior, but in this case, the plastic is on the outside of the tube and does not come into contact with heat/smoke. Metal and glass pipes are the most durable (if you don't drop your glass pipe) and easier to clean compared to wooden pipes.
